Reformer for Padel – Sports-Specific Masterclass & Workshop
Friday 4th September | 1:00–2:30pm | Live on Zoom
Recorded if you can’t attend live
We’re launching a brand-new series of Sports-Specific Fitness Pilates and Reformer Workshops, and we’re kicking off with one of the fastest-growing sports – Padel.
Join Rachel Holmes for Reformer for Padel, a practical 90-minute masterclass and workshop exploring how Reformer training can be used to support the specific physical and movement demands of Padel.
If you’re a Reformer instructor looking to develop your sports-specific programming, work with a new type of client or simply bring fresh ideas into your existing sessions, this workshop will give you plenty of practical exercises, sequences and programming ideas.
Why Reformer Training for Padel?
Padel is a fast, dynamic and multi-directional sport.
Players need to accelerate, decelerate, change direction, rotate, reach and react quickly, often while maintaining control through a wide variety of positions.
This places demands on the whole body, particularly the hips, legs, core, shoulders and trunk.
Reformer training offers instructors an opportunity to develop many of these physical qualities in a controlled environment, using resistance, assistance and multi-plane movement.
Rather than simply selecting general Reformer exercises, this workshop will look at how we can choose and adapt movements specifically around the demands of Padel.
What Will We Cover?
During the workshop we’ll explore the key physical qualities that can support Padel performance, including:
- Rotational strength and control
- Multi-plane movement
- Lateral movement and change of direction
- Hip strength and mobility
- Core strength and stability
- Shoulder strength and mobility
- Balance and coordination
- Lower-body strength
- Unilateral training
- Mobility and recovery
- Programming to support physical resilience and reduce injury risk
We’ll look at how these movement qualities appear during Padel and how we can use the Reformer to develop them.
Rotational Strength and Multi-Plane Movement
Padel isn’t a sport that takes place purely forwards and backwards.
Players are constantly moving through the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes, making multi-plane training an important part of sports-specific programming.
During the workshop, we’ll explore Reformer exercises that incorporate rotation alongside upper and lower-body movement.
We’ll also look at how arm drivers and different movement patterns can be layered into exercises to make them more specific to the demands of the sport.
Lateral Movement and Change of Direction
Quick lateral movement is a major component of Padel.
Players need to be able to move efficiently across the court, react to the ball and repeatedly change direction.
We’ll explore how exercises such as standing and kneeling hip abduction, lateral patterns and unilateral lower-body sequences can be used to develop strength, stability and control.
The emphasis isn’t simply on making exercises harder. It’s about understanding why we’re choosing an exercise and how it relates to movement on court.
Developing the Hips and Lower Body
Strong, mobile hips and good lower-body control are important for moving effectively around the court.
We’ll look at exercises that challenge:
Hip abduction • Hip extension • Squatting • Lunging • Unilateral strength • Balance • Mobility
We’ll also explore how changing spring resistance, body position and movement direction can alter the emphasis of an exercise.
Core Strength and Rotational Control
Core training for Padel needs to go beyond traditional abdominal exercises.
The trunk needs to produce, transfer and control force while the upper and lower body are moving.
We’ll explore Reformer sequences that incorporate anti-rotation, controlled rotation, lateral flexion and integrated whole-body movement.
This can help instructors create more functional core training that relates directly to sporting movement.
Shoulder Strength and Mobility
Racket sports also place significant demands on the shoulders and upper body.
We’ll look at Reformer exercises that can help develop shoulder mobility, stability and strength while integrating the movement of the trunk and lower body.
Rather than isolating every area, we’ll explore how to create integrated movement sequences that involve the whole kinetic chain.
Padel-Specific Reformer Sequences
A major part of the workshop will be practical.
Rachel will take you through a range of Padel-specific Reformer sequences, explaining the reasoning behind each exercise and how it could relate to movement on court.
We’ll explore ways to progress and regress exercises so that you can adapt the sequences for different clients and ability levels.
You’ll be able to take the ideas away and begin incorporating them into your own sessions immediately.
How to Structure a Reformer for Padel Session
We’ll also look beyond individual exercises and explore how you could structure a complete Reformer for Padel session or programme.
This could include:
- Mobility and movement preparation
- Lower-body strength
- Lateral and multi-directional movement
- Unilateral training
- Rotational strength
- Upper-body and shoulder work
- Core integration
- Balance and coordination
- Mobility and recovery
We’ll discuss how the balance of these components could change depending on the individual you’re working with.
A recreational player may have very different requirements from an experienced athlete who is already completing additional strength and conditioning.
Create a New Sports-Specific Offering
For Reformer instructors, sports-specific programming also creates an exciting opportunity to expand your services.
You could offer:
- One-to-one Reformer for Padel sessions
- Small-group Padel conditioning
- Short Reformer for Padel courses
- Padel mobility and recovery sessions
- Pre-season programmes
- Workshops for local Padel clubs
- Partnerships with coaches and Padel facilities
As Padel continues to attract new players, there is an opportunity for instructors to build relationships with this growing community and create programmes that complement their time on court.
Who Is This Workshop For?
Reformer for Padel is ideal for Reformer instructors who want to expand their knowledge of sports-specific programming and introduce a different style of training to their clients.
You don’t need to be a Padel coach or an advanced Padel player.
The focus is on understanding the physical and movement demands of the sport and using your existing Reformer knowledge to create appropriate exercise and programming ideas.
Introducing Our New Sports-Specific Series
Reformer for Padel is the first workshop in our new Sports-Specific Fitness Pilates & Reformer series.
We’ll be exploring how Fitness Pilates and Reformer training can be adapted to support the demands of different sports, giving instructors fresh programming ideas and opportunities to develop specialist classes, workshops and services.
If you’re ready to take your Reformer programming in a new direction, join us for the first workshop.
