Reformer for Padel: How Reformer Pilates Can Support Padel Players

Reformer Pilates for Padel – Strength, Rotation, Mobility and Performance

Reformer for Padel is an exciting new area of sports-specific Reformer Pilates programming, combining the benefits of Reformer training with the physical demands of one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK.

Padel requires far more than simply being able to hit the ball. Players need to repeatedly rotate, accelerate, decelerate, move laterally, change direction and react quickly, often from challenging positions.

This creates a fantastic opportunity for Pilates and Reformer instructors.

How can we use Reformer Pilates for Padel to help players become stronger, move more effectively and build the physical capacity required for the game?

That’s exactly what we explore in my new Reformer for Padel Sports-Specific Masterclass & Workshop, which is now available to purchase and watch on replay.

    What Is Reformer for Padel?

Reformer for Padel is about taking the principles and exercises we already use on the Pilates Reformer and programming them specifically around the movement patterns and physical demands of Padel.

Rather than simply delivering a general Reformer class to someone who happens to play Padel, we can ask:

What does a Padel player actually need?

We can then select exercises, sequences, resistance and movement patterns that support those requirements.

The Reformer gives us so many possibilities for working through different planes of movement and developing strength, control, mobility, balance and coordination.

Why Reformer Pilates Works So Well for Padel

Padel is a dynamic, multi-directional sport.

Players aren’t simply moving forwards and backwards. They are constantly adjusting their position, reaching, rotating and moving laterally around the court.

This means a Reformer Pilates for Padel programme can incorporate much more than traditional linear strength work.

    1. Rotational Strength and Control

    Rotation is fundamental to Padel.

The Reformer allows us to explore rotational movement while also challenging the client to control the movement through the trunk, hips and shoulders.

We can programme sequences that develop both rotation and anti-rotation, helping the player become stronger and more controlled through these patterns.

    2. Lateral Movement

Padel involves repeated side-to-side movement and quick changes of direction.

Reformer exercises can be adapted to challenge the hips, glutes and lower body through lateral and multi-plane movement patterns.

    3. Hip Strength and Mobility

The hips play an important role in changing direction, lowering the body, generating force and transferring movement through the kinetic chain.

A Reformer for Padel programme can combine hip mobility with progressive strengthening, rather than treating mobility and strength as completely separate elements.

    4. Core Strength and Stability

For Padel players, core training isn’t just about abdominal exercises.

We want the trunk to be able to create, transfer and control force as the player moves and rotates.

This gives us opportunities to incorporate unilateral work, anti-rotation exercises, integrated whole-body sequences and dynamic core training.

    5. Shoulder Strength and Mobility

The shoulder needs both mobility and control for racket sports.

Reformer programming can incorporate the shoulders, upper back and trunk together, rather than looking at the shoulder completely in isolation.

    6. Unilateral Strength

Padel naturally involves asymmetrical and unilateral movement.

Including single-leg and unilateral Reformer exercises can challenge balance, stability, strength and coordination, while providing lots of opportunities for progression.

Reformer Pilates for Padel Isn’t Just About Strength

One of the reasons I love using the Reformer for sports-specific programming is the ability to move seamlessly between different training objectives.

    A session could incorporate:

    Strength → Control → Balance → Rotation → Mobility → Recovery

We can use spring resistance to increase muscular challenge and then change the set-up to explore mobility and range of movement.

This makes Reformer Pilates a really interesting addition to a Padel player’s wider training programme.

How Do You Structure a Reformer for Padel Class?

This is where instructors can get creative.

Rather than collecting random exercises that look appropriate for Padel, think about the purpose of each section of the session.

For example, you could structure a Reformer for Padel class around:

    Preparation and mobility
Prepare the hips, thoracic spine and shoulders for movement.

    Lower-body strength
Develop the glutes, legs and hips using bilateral and unilateral exercises.

    Lateral and multi-plane movement
Move away from exclusively forwards-and-backwards training.

    Rotation and core control
    Introduce rotational and anti-rotational patterns.

    Upper-body strength
Work through the shoulders, arms and upper back.

    Balance and coordination
Combine strength with more complex movement challenges where appropriate.

    Mobility and recovery
Finish with controlled mobility and stretching sequences.

The exact session will depend on the player’s ability, experience and individual needs.

A New Opportunity for Reformer Pilates Instructors

This is also a really exciting business opportunity for Reformer instructors.

Padel participation is growing, new courts and clubs are opening and players are looking for ways to improve their fitness away from the court.

As a Reformer instructor, you could potentially create:

    • Reformer for Padel small-group classes
    • Padel strength and mobility sessions
    • Reformer for Padel workshops
    • Six-week Padel conditioning programmes
    • One-to-one sessions for Padel players
    • Partnerships with local Padel clubs and coaches
    • Pre-season or tournament preparation programmes
    • Padel mobility and recovery sessions

Instead of competing with every other general Reformer class in your area, sports-specific Reformer programming gives you an opportunity to create something different.

Watch the Reformer for Padel Workshop Replay

I’ve created a complete Reformer for Padel – Sports-Specific Masterclass & Workshop for Reformer instructors who want to explore this area in more detail.

The workshop has now taken place live, but you can purchase the full replay and work through it in your own time.

During the workshop, I take you through a range of Padel-specific Reformer exercises and sequences, looking at why we select particular movements and how they relate to the demands of the game.

    We explore:

    • Rotational strength and control
    • Multi-plane movement
    • Lateral movement and change of direction
    • Hip strength and mobility
    • Core strength and stability
    • Shoulder strength and mobility
    • Balance and coordination
    • Lower-body strength
    • Unilateral training
    • Mobility and recovery
    • Programming to support physical resilience and reduce injury risk

You’ll also learn how to start structuring your own Reformer for Padel sessions and programmes, which you can adapt for different clients, from recreational Padel players through to more experienced athletes.
