FAQs
Helping You Understand Our Pilates Qualifications Better
If you have any questions regarding our Pilates qualifications you can reach out to us via email: rachel@choreographytogo.com
What qualifications do I need to become a Pilates instructor?
To teach Pilates professionally in the UK, you’ll need a recognised Level 3 Pilates instructor qualification.
Our Active IQ Level 3 Mat Pilates and YMCA Level 3 Reformer Pilates courses are Ofqual-regulated, CIMSPA-recognised, and designed to give you the credentials to teach safely, confidently, and with full insurance coverage.
Do I need to attend any in-person training?
If you choose an online course then no — they are fully online qualification. All modules, assessments, and tutor support are delivered digitally, so you can study from anywhere, at your own pace.
If you would prefer to do a face to face, in person course, these are now also available and run at our Derbyshire studio.
I already hold the Level 3 Exercise and Fitness Knowledge (EFK) qualification — do I need to retake it?
If you’ve passed your Level 3 EFK within the last 2 years, you won’t need to take it again. However, this does not reduce the overall course fee.
Is this a recognised Level 3 Pilates qualification?
Yes. Both our Active IQ Mat and YMCA Reformer courses are nationally recognised Level 3 Pilates qualifications.
They are approved by Ofqual and CIMSPA, ensuring your certification is accepted by employers, gyms, and insurers across the UK.
Is the course accredited by an awarding body?
Yes — and both are accredited by top UK awarding organisations:
Active IQ for the Level 3 Mat Pilates qualification (delivered 100% online).
YMCA Awards for the Level 3 Reformer Pilates qualification, available online or with an optional face-to-face training day at Rachel Holmes’ studio in Derbyshire.
Both are fully regulated by Ofqual, giving you genuine, industry-recognised status.
Can I get insurance to teach while completing my training?
Yes. Once you’re enrolled on either course, you can apply for student instructor insurance, allowing you to assist in classes and gain real teaching experience while completing your L3 Pilates qualification.
Is the Level 3 Pilates course suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. Both the Active IQ Mat and YMCA Reformer courses are designed for anyone passionate about Pilates — even if you’ve never taught before.
You’ll be guided step-by-step through anatomy, technique, and class programming with full tutor support.
Do I need a Level 2 qualification before enrolling in Level 3 Pilates?
You don’t need any prior qualifications to enrol on the Active IQ Level 3 Mat Pilates course — it’s open to all learners with a passion for Pilates.
For the YMCA Level 3 Reformer Pilates qualification, you’ll need to already hold or be working towards your Level 3 Mat qualification.
If you’re starting fresh and want to teach Reformer Pilates, we offer a special package that includes both courses, allowing you to qualify in Mat and Reformer Pilates together and fast-track your teaching career.
What’s the difference between the Level 3 Mat and Reformer Pilates courses?
Active IQ Level 3 Mat Pilates — focuses on floor-based movement, anatomy, posture correction, and safe mat-based programming. Fully online.
YMCA Level 3 Reformer Pilates — teaches resistance-based movement using the reformer machine. Includes optional in-person training at Rachel Holmes’ studio in Derbyshire for hands-on experience.
Both are Level 3 qualifications but prepare you for different teaching styles and environments.
Do I need to complete Mat training before Reformer?
It’s recommended but not essential.
Many learners complete the Active IQ Mat course first to build a strong foundation before progressing to the YMCA Reformer course.
However, if you already have Pilates experience, you can start directly with the Reformer qualification.
Can I complete the Level 3 Pilates course online?
Yes — both courses offer flexible online learning:
Active IQ Mat – 100% online, with on-demand lessons and tutor feedback.
YMCA Reformer – online theory and assessment with the option of one in-person training day at Rachel’s Derbyshire studio for practical learning and technique refinement.
How long does it take to qualify from start to finish?
Most students complete their Level 3 Pilates qualification within 8–12 weeks, depending on personal pace and study time.
You’ll have immediate access to your online dashboard and full tutor support from day one.
Will I be qualified to teach Pilates after completing the course?
Yes — once qualified, you’ll be able to teach Pilates classes relevant to your chosen course: Mat or Reformer. You can work in studios, gyms, or offer your own online and in-person sessions.
Can I pay in instalments or use a payment plan?
Yes — you can split the cost using Klarna at checkout. This allows you to pay in instalments while starting the course straight away. If your employer is covering the fee, we can also issue an invoice directly to them.
What course materials are included?
You’ll receive a PDF course manual and access to high-quality, on-demand video tutorials. These cover practical technique, anatomy, teaching skills, and equipment usage (for Reformer).
What topics are covered in the courses?
Both courses include anatomy, posture, teaching principles, movement screening, and practical sequences. The Mat course focuses on classical and contemporary matwork, while the Reformer course includes machine setup, safety, and progressive programming.
