    Fitness Business Newsletter 3rd April

    Good morning,

I’m a bit obsessed with the membership model in a fitness business especially the digital online membership for the freelance group fitness instructor.

    Why?

Because it allows you, the Instructor, with minimal start-up costs, to create an online membership which includes pre-recorded and live stream classes, that will reach and serve many more people than you can in a community venue, with no room hall/rental/travel costs that you can market (for free) on social media.

The health clubs and centres are not going to increase wages for group fitness from what I can see, and the masses are there waiting for you online. Your potential customers are there. Now, of course, you have to want to do this and have an entrepreneurial mindset but somehow you have found your way onto my business newsletter, so I’m assuming you’re thinking about it and perhaps need some help and guidance.

My Theme for April is Freedom, Flexibility & Finance and how you can obtain those in your business. The online membership model can deliver all of those things…

How to Build a Successful Fitness Online Membership

You may have started a membership during lockdown and you might be clinging to it for dear life. Perhaps it’s not growing, or you’re looking to build an income stream with monthly recurring revenue.

Here are my top tips to help you create a thriving membership.

    • Be clear about who your membership is for and what problem it will solve. Whether it’s a Mind/Body membership, workouts that are all 15 or 20 minutes, weighted workouts, a membership for those aged 65+, perimenopausal women, menopausal women, or people who love a variety of group fitness classes, your membership needs a theme, a unique selling proposition (USP), and a clear target audience (avatar).

    • Pricing: If your pricing is low, you’ll need a LOT of members to make it worthwhile. Don’t be afraid to create a higher-priced membership with fewer people for more exclusivity. Consider a high-end golf membership where there’s always a waiting list due to limited spaces. You could offer a membership for £99 a month and only work with 20 people, rather than a £10 or £15 a month membership that requires many more members to be viable.

    • Less is more when you start a membership. Launch with a smaller timetable that is easy for you to manage. You can add more as you attract more members.

    • Starting with a Facebook group is fine, but remember, Facebook is ever-changing. Plan for the future and consider upgrading to your own membership site as time goes on. I am always striving to improve my memberships with better technology and ease of use for members.

    • To market an existing membership, create shorter courses of 7/14/21 days where new people can experience working with you for a shorter time frame, without having to subscribe. At the end of the course, you can upsell your main membership. Do this at least monthly to keep attracting new members consistently.

    • Provide member benefits: Offer discounts on your products, collaborate with other businesses to offer discounts, and create meetups and live in-person events to build community.

    • Bring in other professionals to teach and swap classes. If it’s only you, it’s hard to take breaks, holidays, and it can be a bit monotonous for the members week in week out, month in month out etc.

    • Learn the tech: Understand how to stream live and pre-recorded videos, get a mic and a mixer so your streams and videos are of a high-quality level, and keep improving your technology to attract new people.

    • Understand how to create consistent social media content to attract your ideal client avatar.

Have you got a membership, or do you want to launch a new one?
