The Dos and Don’ts of Group Fitness Instructing

As a group fitness instructor, it’s important to create a safe and enjoyable environment for your clients.

Here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind when instructing a group fitness class:

    Dos:

    1. Do introduce yourself: Greet your clients and introduce yourself at the start of the class. This will help to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
    2. Do create a workout plan: Plan your workout in advance, including warm-up, main workout, and cool-down. This will help to ensure that your class flows smoothly and is well-structured.
    3. Do demonstrate proper technique: Demonstrate proper technique for each exercise and provide modifications as needed. This will help to ensure that your clients are performing exercises correctly and safely.
    4. Do encourage and motivate: Provide words of encouragement and motivation throughout the class. This will help to keep your clients engaged and working hard.
    5. Do monitor your clients: Keep an eye on your clients throughout the class and provide feedback as needed. This will help to ensure that they are performing exercises correctly and safely.
    6. Do have fun: Group fitness classes should be enjoyable and fun for everyone involved. Smile, be positive, and create a fun and welcoming environment.

    Dont’s:

    1. Don’t ignore injuries: If a client is injured, make sure to provide modifications or alternate exercises to ensure that they can participate safely.
    2. Don’t use negative language: Avoid using negative language or making negative comments about your clients. This can be demotivating and create a negative environment.
    3. Don’t neglect proper warm-up and cool-down: Warm-up and cool-down are important parts of any workout. Don’t neglect them or rush through them.
    4. Don’t forget to cue: Provide clear and concise cues for each exercise. This will help to ensure that your clients are performing exercises correctly and safely.
    5. Don’t over-correct: While it’s important to provide feedback, be careful not to over-correct or criticise your clients. This can be demotivating and create a negative environment.

It may seem simple but these are some basic steps we should all be following for a fun and enjoyable group fitness class!
